Soup turned out great! A little extra virgin olive oil in the bowl gives a nice touch as the broth is pretty much far-free. Soup simmering on the range on a cool autumn day---as good as it gets!

At first reading, the arrogant tone seems outrageous. If confined to a single entry such as this one, one would rightly draw such a conclusion. This dictionary, however, is the most hilarious lampoon of pompous academics. Erudition best be genuine or it will be skewered. The tongue-in-cheek sarcasm is rife, yet this remains an extremely well-referenced and accurate measuring stick for just the right word or expression when the "accepted" substitute will not do. This work ranks with Erma Bombeck for hilarity, but it's subtle. It's the most cleverly-written educational tool one could possess. That's simply something one would not expect from a dictionary.

Delilah's comment on literature in the rest homes reminded me of a friend's invalid grandmother. The elderly lady was sufficiently lucid to lament her not living up to her Catholic faith. My friend said that a JW attendant's preaching to Grandma was relentless and put the old gal into a real state: a sort of double-guilt trip. The family finally spoke to management and got the "spiritual comforter" reassigned.

I need time to study all your well-thought-out comments before venturing into the nether regions; however, one scriptural example that rushed to mind was that of the Maltese who exhibited "extraordinary human kindness" to Paul and his fellow shipwreckees. Certainly, there is commentary on this. I don't know if such a straight-forward example of beneficent action would engender philosophical debate. The Maltese Syndrome is permanently lodged in my heart and mind because of those whom I identify as altruists. This is purely anecdotal and subjective, I realize, but I feel it is genuine. It works for me.

Again the memory jogs---all of the above comes surging back. You know the story: Nick Nasty, a house painter, inadvertently paints himself into a corner of the room, then realizes he's stuck [oil-base paint;hours to dry]. He's cross and rues the day he was born. Looking down, he notices something stuck to the bottom of the paint can. A booklet from the Watchtower Society! Disgruntled, knowing he's cornered and having nothing better to do, he peels it off the can and starts reading, and reading, and....Two days later (the paint did dry) he shows up at the KH, is offered a study, et cetera...and becomes Brother Nicolas Nice. It could happen, you know!
I got in trouble at Bethel for shimming up a wobbly piece of light-weight machinery with the old pink song book. Sacrilege!

I was happy to see your story re-entered here for the benefit of others. Recently you confirmed for me that you were THE Terry of said article, whose best friend is Johnny. Though I've already mentioned it elsewhere, my best friend, an inactive JW and the brother who took me out in service the first time 40 years ago, sent me a copy of MY LIFE some time ago. I read it with interest, of course, but it wasn't yet "my time". Nils and Sherry's story of Joyful Conversion clinched it for me (they were friends at Bethel [had dinner with them recently]).
A friend, your and my age, and I met up yesterday and discussed everything. He went to prison like you and commented that not a single older man (no elders then) offered him support or comfort prior to his incarceration in AZ. I explained to him yesterday why they could/would not offer any sort of help. He had no idea all these years! Bottom line: cowardice.

andy and i go to a program with our five year old grandson that involves child led play therapy.
i am wondering if any of you have done this kind of therapy or know anything about it.
did it work for you or your child or other children you know of?

I realize that this is a stretch, but I just couldn't bear to see this thread go unattended! I'm a teacher at a private school and I train the students to become little teacher's-aides. They love helping me---they feel so important. I listen to their version of what I have taught them (as expressed to another student) and determine if they have gotten the point. Fellow students are cooperative and receptive to each little teacher's instruction. In so many ways it is good "therapy" for them and me.
